The Designs that Forged an Icon: 100 Years of Braun

In fact, it is the same approach used for the development of medical devices. Professional quality management ensures that insights gained from consumer tests are taken into account whenever we develop new products. Is the new product efficient, safe, robust, and durable? We check our devices for their performance, operational capability at different temperatures, water tightness, and resistance to chemicals – to name just a few examples. In order to meet the highest of demands, a Braun product may have to pass more than 60 quality management tests during the development stage. In the Good Design Masterclass series, Braun's three core principles – simple, useful and built to last – were explored as Crawford discussed how each one could be applied to today's design industry and influence a new generation of designers. Designed to Keep gives meaning to the story of Braun by showing how generations of people drew inspiration from both past and current events to create products with sustained appeal.

It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic. Good design emphasises the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design.

The 2019 design also has two titanium coated trimmers that capture more hair per stroke than any other shaver on the market. It also featured an integrated beard trimmer and shaver switch, which was the first "switch-in-switch" brought to market. The technology later became commonplace in razor design but the Micron Plus paved the way.

Braun's famous SK 4 radiogram and the high-quality "D"-series (D25–D47) of 35mm slide projectors are some of the better examples of Functionalist design. An Influential New Design DirectorIn 1962 Rams was appointed director of Braun’s team of young designers. Having established its own design resource, the company became progressively less reliant on advice from the Ulm tutors.

In the year punk flipped the future of music on its head, this pocket calculator was doing the same thing in the design world. Even if you haven’t used one of these, you have certainly seen its influence in the icon for the calculator app on your phone. You just have to look at this shaver next to any of its contemporaries to see how revolutionary its design was in 1962. User comfort is prioritised in Series 9 thanks to a number of technological breakthroughs, including SynchroSonic cutting system technology, which reads beard density and automatically adapts the motor output accordingly, 160 times a minute.

So it's the early 1950s, and Braun is already making a name for itself in the world of electrical products. Along comes a man by the name of Dieter Rams, hired as an architect and interior designer for the brand. In the 1970s, a design approach influenced by pop art began to inspire Braun products, which included many common household appliances and products. Contemporary Braun design of the period incorporated this new approach in bright colours and a lightness of touch while still clean-lined in keeping with functionalist philosophy. Rams enjoyed grappling with new challenges and relished the chance to work on different products, producing objects that reflected his design philosophy. A particular favourite was the 1968 T2 Cylinder cigarette lighter inspired by the development of a new magnetic ignition technology.

History of Braun Design: A Deep Dive Into an Iconic Brand

The L 450 flat loudspeaker, TG 60 tape recorder, and TS 45 control unit came together to form a wall-mounted stereo system that was not only lightyears ahead of similar products technically but also visually. Housed in a clean aluminum carrying case, finished with an untreated leather handle, the TP 1 was the first appliance to combine two audio devices. TP 1 merged the T 4 pocket transistor radio and the P 1 miniature gramophone into one portable product. This fashion-defying food blender from 1957 was produced with only slight modifications for over three decades making it one of the longest-lived industrial products of all time.

The brown team

He was also the BraunPrize jury chairman between 1996 and 2009 (4). During his leadership, Schneider and the brand tried to break away from the very defined and ‘tight’ design style that Dieter Rams had determined. It was an experimental phase that was also trying to reconcile the needs of wider cultural contexts in a world that was becoming more and more global. To accomplish this, Titel Media GmbH tests, remediates and maintains the Website in-line with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), which also bring the Website into conformance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

The 1950s also saw the start of kitchen appliances, like the mixer MX 3 and the kitchen machine (Küchenmaschine or kitchen machine) Braun KM 3. The KM 3 is a family of food processors that started with the model KM 3/31 in 1957. Designed by Gerd A. Müller, these machines were built in nearly unchanged form for 36 years until 1993. Sir Terence Conran has had more impact than any other designer of his generation on everyday life in contemporary Britain though a series of parallel careers. Rams’ objective was to design useful products which would be easy to operate.

Navigation gets an assist with a comprehensive index that also identifies which pages have illustrations, alongside a glossary that helps readers make sense of Braun’s cryptic product names. “When you’re new someplace and you have to introduce yourself, or enter a room and say ‘I’m so and so,’ you don’t shout. ’ it will get irritating.” This makes sense when you understand Rams’ dedication to the creation of a common design language during his four decades at the company. Another thing I really enjoyed while flipping through it was noting the size and placement of the Braun logo — first introduced with the raised “A” in 1935. At the end of the 1990s, Braun and Gillette suffered losses in several areas.

With a stacked, vertical design that resembled a water tower, the KF 20 was known as the Aromaster. Instantly recognizable for its unconventional shape, this coffee maker added a touch of the extraordinary to everyday morning filter coffee. Less, but better - because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with nonessentials. Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment.

By the mid-1960s, Rams’ design style was regarded as the apogee of modernity. Proper design in a time when electronic items were big, clunky, and show-offish. Until 1995, Dieter Rams continued to innovate, releasing hit after hit, gradually changing the way we design, use, and perceive household products.

And today, we're launching with an interactive timeline of some of Braun's notable products from its storied design history. In addition, we have a full gallery of the most recent BraunPrize winners—the work has been honored for its "genius design for a better everyday." The book is laid out chronologically, but the full-page photography (and the author) encourages the reader to flip around casually, bouncing between products and the profiles of each designer and then their influences throughout the company’s 102-year history.

Established in 1968, the BraunPrize was Germany's first international design prize. Core77 is proud to launch a microsite dedicated to the history of Braun design. Over the next few months, we'll be doing a deep dive on the histories of Braun's Shavers, Time Pieces, Audio, Kitchen Appliances and Hair Care product categories.

It doesn’t need anything new, there is no obsolescence - it doesn’t dominate or take over. At Brown, we have been motivated by a desire to better serve our clients since 1976, gracing their homes with the style, sophistication, elegance and warmth that captures the essence of those who live in them. Being a family-owned firm, we understand the value of establishing relationships with our clients, and we embrace the opportunities we have to create their dream homes.

We've spent a long time figuring out some of the best combinations of flavors to put on a pizza. We believe that everyone should try something new but they shouldn't have to commit to the whole pie. Giving the option of slices allows everyone to try everything at least once. Slice House can make that party or function extra tasty with a host of our top notch food! We have been making NY style pies for as long as we can remember! It’s always been a passion for us and now we can bring them to you straight from our new restaurant here in New Jersey.

For those who like upholstered seating, there are two Chesterfield button back sofas (estimate €1,200-€1,800 and €1,000-€1,500). And the George III “Gainsborough” library armchair, upholstered in black leather (estimate €1,200-€1,600), looks like a fine piece of furniture if you had the right spot for it. A silver owl mustard pot (€2,000-€3,000), is an exquisite item among the wide variety of silverware in the auction.

Pizza franchises are businesses that sell pizza and other related products under a specific brand name and business model. The franchisee, or owner of the franchise, pays a fee to the franchisor (the company that owns the brand and business model) in exchange for the right to use the brand name and business model. We’re ready to expand the Slice House pizza franchise brand across the country, and we’re already off to an exciting start. We’ve developed a franchise model that helps to take the guesswork out of your investment. We launched five Slice Houses at Raiders Allegiant Stadium this season, so it’s exciting. We had three Pizza Rock kiosks in Allegiant, over the summer. The contents of country house libraries are also the inspiration for Adam’s annual “Library Collection” auction, which will take place on Wednesday. It looks like the first group is going to be in L.A., five locations, with the first of them breaking ground in Thousand Oaks. You can’t really look at the Slice House here next to Tony’s, and say that’s what these new locations are going to be. Slice House by Tony Gemignani, a dynamic pizzeria concept led by the 13-time world pizza champion, delivers an artisan pizza experience born from its 2010 origins in San Francisco’s renowned North Beach district. The unusual four-bill package also includes a measure that includes a threat to ban the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok and the potential transfer of seized Russian assets to Ukraine. This collection of furniture, clocks, porcelain and glass, which has never previously been on the market, has been in Ireland with relatives of the Dawes family for the last three decades or so. One of the highlights of the sale, according to James O’Halloran of the auction house, is that over 80, of the total 370 lots, originate from a Pennsylvania farmhouse built by Abraham Dawes. The property was used as the headquarters by Gen. George Washington [later the first president of the United States] in 1777, during the American Revolutionary War.

"It's not the perfect legislation, it's not the legislation that we would write if Republicans were in charge of both the House, the Senate, and the White House," Johnson told reporters on Friday. "This is the best possible product that we can get under these circumstances to take care of these really important obligations." Some hardline Republicans voicing strong opposition to further Ukraine aid argued the United States can ill afford it given its rising $34 trillion national debt. They have repeatedly raised the threat of ousting Johnson, who became speaker in October after his predecessor, Kevin McCarthy, was ousted by party hardliners.

The canal stretches approximately 48 miles between Colón on the Atlantic coast and Panama City on the Pacific Coast, and it can take between nine and 10 hours to traverse. Despite the early start, you'll want to be prepared for the Panama sun, as it can get surprisingly hot while you're out there waiting. Some ships will do their best to make passengers comfortable, offering chilled towels and water, juice and Panama rolls (Danish-like pastries with sweet fruit filling in the center) for a small breakfast alfresco. Other great shore excursion options include taking the refurbished Panama Railway from the Pacific to the Atlantic.

It wasn’t until the early 20th century, with a strong push from President Theodore Roosevelt, that the United States took over construction of the canal from the French, an epic job that took a decade to complete. At the end of it all, in 1904, construction of the canal could finally take place; after 10 years, it was complete. How to Plan the Best Alaska Cruise

Once you’ve docked at Pier 91 in Smith Cove Cruise Terminal—an old naval base about 2 miles north of downtown Seattle—you’ll be a short walk from several local boutiques in what’s known as the Magnolia neighborhood. Nearly a dozen major cruise ships operate Alaska cruises out of Seattle during the summer months, giving cruisers plenty of choice. Unlike the Royal Caribbean and Norwegian ships mentioned above, the two Princess ships sailing from Seattle don't have top decks heavily skewed to family fun. Instead, their top decks offer lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas where you can enjoy the experience of being at sea without much hustle and bustle. Princess has long been heralded as one of the best cruise lines for multigenerational travel, in part because its ships offer a little something for travelers of all ages. Notably, both Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore boast large private zones for solo travelers — something you won't find on any other cruise ship sailing out of Seattle. Still, you can get a variation on a luxury cruise experience on a voyage to Alaska from Seattle on Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Encore.

You can learn about their history and culture at the Sitka National Historical Park and Sheldon Jackson Museum of Native Alaskan art. Wildlife enthusiasts might want to visit the Alaska Raptor Center, or go bird- and bear-watching. Hop a bus, kayak, boat or plane to look for bears, eagles, whales, sea otters and other wildlife.

WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?

If you're more interested in the Alaska Northern Lights, the earlier sunset in later summer will allow more contrast and better views of this natural wonder. From the sweeping mountains of Juneau to the fish-bearing seas of Ketchikan, discover our Alaska cruise ports and set sail into the adventures that await you. With national parks and four of North America’s tallest mountains, Alaska’s wilderness has been preserved for generations. Denali National Park is larger than Vermont and home to the highest peak on the continent. Meanwhile, Glacier Bay National Park has over 2,000 square miles of glacial coverage. Elias and Kenai Fjords, a world of natural wonders awaits on an Alaska cruise or cruisetour.

We negotiate lower rates with the airlines, allow you to modify your flight up to 45 days prior with no penalty and protect you if your flight is late or canceled. Seattle is known as "The Emerald City" thanks to its green forests and lush surroundings. Pike Place Market buzzes with merchants while coffee shops house locals drinking espresso in America's coffee capital. Climb the Space Needle and enjoy the Seattle skyline, or explore the history of Pioneer Square, the city's oldest neighborhood — only when you cruise to Alaska from Seattle. The population of Haines remains less than 2,000, according to the United States Census Bureau, and it isn't yet as touristy as some of the other Alaskan ports, such as nearby Skagway. It's known for great fishing (salmon, halibut and trout) and an eagle preserve — because eagles know where the best fish can be found.

For a view of the city and cruise port, take a ride in the sky on the Mount Roberts Tramway. Various wildlife-viewing trips (whale, bears and more) and visits to dog-sled camps and salmon bakes leave from Juneau. Floatplane and helicopter tours take you around scenic areas like Misty Fjords or land you on a glacier, perhaps for a dog-sledding or hiking adventure on the ice.

The Best Alaska Cruises

Everyone can come back together for dinner and evening entertainment or onboard activities suitable for all ages. On a cruise from Seattle, make ever-lasting memories aboard Crown Princess® with international fare in our specialty restaurants as well as hot music and cool cocktails at the Skywalkers Nightclub. Both ships are almost identical, but we give Discovery Princess the edge only because it's newer than Royal Princess. It's yet one more stylish and upscale area for cruisers looking for an upgraded experience to retreat. On Norwegian Encore, there's a much bigger version of the exclusive, extra-charge Vibe Beach Club sunning area that's on Norwegian Bliss.

Travel Tips for Seattle

You can also visit the former Russian capital city, Alaska Raptor Center, and Sitka National Historical Park. The Alaska Raptor Center is home to owls, hawks, bald eagles, and other birds of prey. Sitka also has a long history with fine arts and was once known as the "Paris of the Pacific." You can book an excursion to visit several art galleries and learn how to pull a Venetian-style glass cane. Alaska's impressive southern coastlines contain hordes of island archipelagos, deep fjords and ancient glaciers. Nearly all of the area is roadless, so seafaring vessels, including cruise ships, are a popular way for visitors to experience these pristine areas.

Both combine a look at the rugged, raw coastlines with time spent on shore in towns with few frills. Weather can often be cold, rainy and windy, but if you want a unique adventure in Alaska, check out the itineraries from Hurtigruten. Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventure or are hoping to spot wildlife in their natural habitat, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during a cruise to Alaska. For more information, visit our hotel packages and pre- or post-travel arrangements. On a cruise from Seattle, relive history at Pioneer Square, the city’s oldest neighborhood dating back to 1852. Ascend the Space Needle, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city from the 520-foot high skydeck. Learn how commercial jets are assembled at Boeing’s Future of Flight Aviation Center. Or sample crab cakes, chowder and cheese at Pike Place Market, or shop the artisan handicrafts and curio markets within.

Icy Strait Point is notable among Alaska cruise ports because the area and its attractions are all Native Alaskan-owned. Most port and tour staff hail from Hoonah, Alaska's largest Tlingit village. The port is set on Chichagof Island, which is known for its large bear population. Wildlife lovers have plenty of opportunities to search for whales and eagles here; adventure-seekers won't want to miss the ZipRider, with its course of six zip lines. Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian, Princess and Royal Caribbean all have extensive kids clubs aboard their ships that cater to all ages, from babies to teens.

For those looking for a couples retreat, Viking Cruises cater exclusively to adults. The minimum age is 18, and the ship is designed for a luxurious and tranquil experience, so you can truly get away from it all. Kids can hang out in the youth lounges while parents hit the spa or try a wine-tasting class.

The top decks of Holland America vessels, notably, lack many of the kid-focused attractions found on the top decks of more family-focused ships operated by the likes of Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Norwegian. That often keeps families with younger kids from booking the ships. While Holland America draws some families with younger children, the passengers on its ships skew heavily toward middle-aged and older travelers, including many retirees.

Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore

To ensure a smooth check-in process, it’s recommended that you arrive at least two hours before your scheduled departure time. This will give you ample time to navigate through any potential traffic or transportation delays and avoid long queues that can cause unnecessary stress. In 2016, fully owned subsidiary SCC Travel Services Pte Ltd (STS) was formed to inspire travel to the destinations connected to its terminal network. STS is a B2C online travel agent retailing travel products from Bintan, Batam, Karimun and Singapore through its portal WOW Getaways.

Transportation at the International Passenger Terminal

Singapore celebrates New Year’s Day on January 1st like most countries around the world. However, Singapore also celebrates Chinese New Year which usually falls between late January to mid-February depending on the lunar calendar. During this time, many businesses are closed and there are various festivities happening all over the city. All you should know from the latest happenings in our terminal, to events in various destinations. This architectural icon offers impressive views of the downtown Singapore skyline and the Straits of Singapore.

The city also is clean -- so much so that, for years, people were forbidden by law to chew gum in its streets, and eating on the subway can result in a heavy fine. This modern and dynamic destination -- which ranks either as a pro or a con, depending on your sensibilities -- is to cities what Disney is to theme parks. Stay indoors with the largest shopping mall nearby, or hop across to visit the popular island resorts. For those who have extra time in Singapore before or after their cruise, there are plenty of shore excursions and hotels near the Singapore Cruise Centre. Whether it’s exploring local landmarks or indulging in delicious cuisine, there’s no shortage of activities to keep you occupied. Visitors can arrange voyages and tours from the marine terminal through various tour operators.

SG Clean is a national mark of excellence for businesses that adhere to high standards of environmental public hygiene. But perhaps what truly makes the Singapore Cruise Centre stand out is its commitment to providing top-notch service. Whether you’re boarding a ship or disembarking after a long voyage, you’ll find staff members who are eager to help you with anything you need. The addition of MBCCS and the Singapore Cruise Centre at HarbourFront are expected to grow the leisure cruise sector in Singapore. Its waterfront location at Marina Bay brings you closer to attractions such as Gardens by the Bay and Marina Barrage as well as the business financial centre and Marina Bay Sands®.

Baggage Storage: A Convenient Solution for Passengers

Previously, most ships docked at the Singapore Cruise Centre, which is part of the large Harbourfront Centre and VivoCity, about a 10- to 15-minute taxi drive from downtown. Singapore Cruise Centre is used by lines such as Holland America, and some others operating smaller ships. Cruise lines like Celebrity, Cunard, Princess and Royal Caribbean have moved their turnarounds to the Marina Bay facility.

There are check-in counters, baggage drop-off points, and immigration counters to facilitate a seamless embarkation process. Inside the terminals, passengers can find duty-free shops, restaurants, and lounges to relax and unwind before their cruise journey. Many of the hotels near the Singapore Cruise Centre offer shuttle services to and from the port, saving guests time and hassle. For example, Marina Bay Sands Hotel provides complimentary shuttle buses that run every 20 minutes between its property and HarbourFront MRT Station.

The International Passenger Terminal in Singapore Cruise Port

If you’re a cruise passenger coming into Singapore, you can’t miss the massive cruise ships berthing at the new Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore (MBCCS). Currently, MBCCS terminal has 1 pier with 2 berths, docking capacity two 220,000-ton liners (simultaneously) and max passenger capacity 6800 (at a time). In June 2018, a shore-to-ship drone delivery service was introduced in Port Singapore via partnership between Airbus and Wilhelmsen Ships Service. Deliveries are made to anchored ships and include mainly essential spare parts, documentation, consumables, medical supplies, water testing kits, cash.

Schedule of Cruises Departing from Singapore Cruise Centre

Singapore Cruise Centre (SCC) understands that passengers may need to store their luggage before or after their cruise. To cater to this need, SCC provides baggage storage services at a reasonable price. This service is especially helpful for passengers who arrive at the port early but cannot board their ship yet or those who have some time before their flight after disembarking from their cruise. Getting to Singapore Cruise Centre is easy as it is located within HarbourFront Centre which can be accessed via public transportation such as buses or trains.

Singapore's Changi Airport is connected with direct flights to 320+ cities worldwide. Operating around 6700 flights weekly, the airport is among Asia's major fly-cruise travel hubs. In 2019, Changi Airport launched an intermodal luggage transfer service (from the airport directly to the ship) for fly-cruisers arriving in Singapore and boarding here cruise ships and ferries. This service benefits mainly tourists arriving from China, India and Southeast Asia. Cruise travelers will find in the port one modern cruise terminal on two levels where you will find all basic services and amenities.

This service allows passengers to enjoy their time without worrying about carrying heavy bags around with them. When they are ready to retrieve their luggage, they can do so quickly and easily. The schedules of cruises departing from Singapore Cruise Centre are subject to change depending on the season and demand. It is best to check the schedule of your chosen cruise ahead of time and arrive at the terminal at least two hours before the scheduled departure time.

As the gateway to Southeast Asia and the rest of the world, Singapore is the preferred homeport of numerous cruise lines. If you’re looking to do some last-minute shopping before setting sail, both the Singapore Cruise Centre Terminal and IPT Terminal offer duty-free shopping options.
